Photohydroionization™ is a chemical-free, advanced oxidation technology utilizing high intensity ultraviolet light rays targeted on hydrated tri-metallic targets in a safe, low-level, humid ozone atmosphere. The resulting non-penetrating, ionizing UV radiation in an advanced oxidation atmosphere is a very effective and safe food sanitation method. The effectiveness of photohydroionization™ as an anti-micreobial on food surfaces is basically the same as penetrating radiation: 99.9% surface microbial reduction up to 6 log reductions. The main difference is that penetrating X and Gamma Ray radiation has the ability to penetrate through the packages and through the food surfaces. This is an advantage when treating ground meats since most meat contamination is on the surface; and the grinding operation mixes any surface contamination throughout the mixture. Aside from ground products, surface contamination is the main concern of food processors. Whole muscle meat and poultry bacteria contamination is virtually always found on the surface. Meat with microbial contaminants inside the fiber should not make it to the processing facility in the first place.
In general the public will avoid, when possible, chemical additives in food. Chemicals are on all the current “what’s out” lists, and consumers are becoming more and more educated on the hidden, long term danger of chemicals consumption through food. This is evidence by increasing in the popularity of organic food. Many foods are routinely cleaned with chlorine which converts trihalomethane, known carcinogens. Foods are washed with anywhere from 50 to 600 parts per million of chlorine. Compared to a typical swimming pool, which is treated with 2-3 ppm of Chlorine. Pools with over 5 ppm will have a strong chlorine odour and tend to burn the eyes and turn blonde hair green.

RGF utilizes advanced, friendly oxidizer to provide a food processor with a total anti-microbial package, such as ozone, which has been receiving a lot of attention in the food industry as a friendly replacement for chlorine. Ozone is 3,000 times faster killing bacteria and 150% more powerful than chlorine. RGF’s three-part food sanitation process utilizes ozone in water for safe, friendly and chemical-free food washing. RGF’s photohydroionization™ ozone installations have been very successful in a wide range of food products. Food surfaces can be contaminated from airborne micro organism with in the food processor’s facility. RGF’s photohydroinization™ process has been adopted for use on airborne microorganism, especially mold and bacteria. Most air treatment systems consist of filters, which is fine; however, indoor air pollution consist of three categories:

•  Particulate- dust and particle
•  Gases, fumes and odors
•  Microbial- Mold and bacteria.

Air filters traditionally only filter particulate, which is good and a necessary part of an overall air cleaning program, however it pays little or no attention to gasses, odors or microorganisms. Particulate air filters can actually act as a breeding ground for microbial, a filter will collect particulate. In a moist, dark atmosphere molds and bacteria will grow. By passing the plant’s air through a photohydronization™ chamber, airborne microbail reduction in excess of 90% have been achieved in actual plant applications. In additions, fumes and odors are neutralized. RGF has worked closely with Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) designing, building and installing RGF’s ozone and photohydroiniztion™ systems of air, water and food surfaces. The following arts example of successful application:

RGF - Ozone Contacting System

Ozone is a colorless gas that occurs naturally in the atmosphere. It is the most powerful commercially available oxidizer known to man. Ozone is made from oxygen and reverts back to oxygen upon decomposition. Ozone is more effective than chlorine and it destroyed odors, mold, yeast and microorganisms such as E. Coil., Salmonella, and Listeria Monocytogenes. The use of ozone as a disinfectant is not a new technology and has been used for almost one hundread years as a primary treatment for drinking water supplies.

RGF Anti-Microbial Ozone System is designed for accurate, reliable ozone application for continuous treatment of food products, slicing blades, conveyorbelts and other food contact surfaces. Ozone-laden water is also employed during plant sanitation and CIP processes. The ozone system is mounted in an integated stainless steel enclosure.

The ozone system consists of a high efficiency, air,-cooled, corona discharge ozone generator with internal oxygen concentrator/compresseor. The mass transfer system is designed for maximum efficiency. This includes an injector, contactor, and degassing separator. An off-gas destruct unit is included to capture any ozone not dissolved into water. If needed an optional booster pump can deliver ozone-laden water up to several hundred feet away from the generation point.

The instrumentation package includes a dissolved ozone residual analyzer, 4-20 mAmps controller, pressure gauges and indicator lights. The purpose of the residual analyzer is to continuously monitor the level of residual ozone at the water outlet. Through the controller, this signal is used to increase or decrease the output of the ozone generator at the selected level (set point). An optional ambient ozone detector is also available.

ATS
Advanced Air Sanitation System

Most facilities do not check the air for microorganisms on a daily or monthly basis. Bacteria and mold can continuously breed in ducts and on the evaporator coils of refrigeration systems. As a result, mold and bacteria settling out of the air can contaminate product and equipment. Storage rooms, refrigerated coolers, and employee changing rooms are particularly susceptible to these airborne problems. RGF developed the ATS Air system to provide continuous protection in sensitive air spaces. Air passes through a REME™ / PHI™ oxidation chamber, which destroys airborne microbes with high intensity UV light rays targeted on a quadmetallic compound. The process develops a highly charged atmosphere of Hydroxyl Radicals, Hydro-Peroxides and Super Oxide Ions. This atmosphere oxidizes contaminants in the air with friendly oxidizers. By friendly oxidizer, we mean oxidizer that revert back to oxygen and hydrogen after the oxidation process. No chemical residue or dangerous compounds are emitted from the system. The ATS Air System can reduce levels of airborne microbes and odors by up to 99%. Airborne contaminants in the form of bacteria, mold, and yeast continue to be one of the least addressed issues in most processing plants. Since these organisms cannot be seen they are often ignored. The organisms can enter the facility on employee’s clothing and bodies, through intake and makeup air systems, on packaging materials, wooden pallets and vehicles.
